Bradley Thayer will explore the advantages and disadvantages of the American empire. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States emerged as the lone, unrivaled superpower on the global stage. America's military, diplomatic and economic--not to mention its cultural and ideological--presence is felt throughout the world. President Barack Obama’s administration has pledged to maintain and advance U.S. primacy in the world. But, what exactly are the benefits of American hegemony for the U.S. and the world and do they outweigh the costs and drawbacks of this fledgling empire? Professor Thayer anticipates a lively discussion on the topic, welcomes alternative viewpoints and will address the opinions that dissenters present with his own counter-arguments.
